Hatching eggs

The Farm Hens

On the farm we run two small flocks of free range hens. The Marans are kept for their large dark brown eggs. The cockerels are un-related ,and as such most of our eggs are sold for hatching. Any spare eggs are used by ourselves, or if customers are lucky, sold in the farm shop.  They are housed at night, but have the run of the farm yard in the day time. They are fed mainly on wheat grown on the farm, but also have layers pellets to supplement their diet.

The Old English Game

These small birds are quite different from the Marans. They are kept separate and are very hardy. They lay small white eggs and sit well, They are excellent mothers. Again the eggs are mainly sold for hatching, but because the yolks are very deep yellow they are good for hard boiling with a salad or scrambled eggs.  They are also fed on wheat, but are partial to a bit of cat food as a special treat.
